Tracing Silence Through Light
I’m Avirat, a cinematographer shaped by the light and silences of everyday life. My journey began in still photography — exposing 35mm film, chasing the quiet dialogue between light and time. That pursuit eventually led me to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII, Pune), where I found my voice in moving images.
My Diploma film, Flowering Man, received the National Film Awards, and my documentary, Ugam-Khindaranchi, was acclaimed for its intimate look at Maharashtra’s water crisis. Along the way, I’ve collaborated with studios such as Yash Raj, Flying Saucer, and Endemolshine, working across both fiction and non-fiction cinema.
Rooted in literature, theatre, and the textures of the subcontinent, my images seek to observe — not impose. I’m drawn to stories that breathe quietly, revealing the unseen poetry of ordinary lives.

MY DIPLOMA FILM FLOWERING MAN WAS HONOURED WITH THE GOLDEN LOTUS FOR BEST NON-FEATURE FILM AT THE 71ST NATIONAL FILM AWARDS (2025). THE FILM IS A QUIET MEDITATION ON RESILIENCE AND TRANSFORMATION — A STORY CLOSE TO MY HEART, CRAFTED WITH CARE AND FAITH IN SIMPLICITY. RECEIVING THE AWARD WAS A DEEPLY HUMBLING EXPERIENCE, A REMINDER THAT HONESTY IN STORYTELLING ENDURES. IT BECAME THE PERFECT FAREWELL TO MY FTII JOURNEY — A CHAPTER CLOSING IN GOLDEN LIGHT, AND THE BEGINNING OF A NEW PATH BEHIND THE LENS, WHERE EVERY FRAME NOW FEELS LIKE BOTH A HOMECOMING AND A FRESH START.
